SUMMARY:Bayerisches Hochschulzentrum für China: Beispiele aus der Praxis - Prüfprozesse in der Exportkontrolle
\nAnmeldung

SUMMARY:Berlin Contemporary China Network (BCCN): Africa's Engagement with China in Infrastructure Development
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAfter the fall of the Berlin wall\, the national security strategy of the West changed\, reducing the need for supporters and client states. In that pivot\, Africa lost its relevance. Faced with Western indifference\, African states which had been heavily courted during the Cold War found themselves without friends. This period coincided with China’s rise as the „world’s factory“ and an insatiable appetite for commodities. Africa’s search for new sources of capital and China’s search for resources „at source“ created the perfect confluence of interest out of which China becomes the continent’s largest bilateral creditor and trade partner. This talk tracks that relationship and its implications for today. \nBio: \nW. Gyude Moore is the inaugural Visiting Fellow of Global Neighbours\, a Vienna-based do-and-think tank\, which intends to “inform\, connect and empower business\, politics and society to build a bridge between Europe\, Asia and beyond”. \nHe is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center for Global Development (CGD\, Washington/London). He previously served as Liberia’s Minister of Public Works and prior to that\, as Deputy Chief of Staff to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Head of the President’s Delivery Unit. At CGD\, Moore focuses on governance\, infrastructure in Africa and the changing landscape of development finance on the continent. His research tracks the role of external actors on the continent\, especially the rise of China\, and Africa’s response to these changes. He is also a lecturer at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte in Berlin (MPIWG): Science Popularization and Environmental Food Safety Risks in China
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese government is aiming for a more scientifically literate population and has therefore stepped up its science popularization work. One field in which it attempts to increase people’s scientific knowledge is the ecological environment. Related science popularization efforts are often informed by state policies. Chinese bookstores therefore carry many books on topics such as green consumption and low carbon lifestyles in their science popularization sections.\nIn my paper I address science popularization work in China by analyzing popular science books that discuss environmental problems in the context of people’s everyday lives. Specifically\, I look at how they treat a concern that ranks high in terms of Chinese citizen’s priorities – environmental food safety risks\, i.e.\, foodborne health risks that are caused by environmental pollution\, often stemming from agrochemical use – to reveal how these books envision citizens‘ roles in tackling the environmental food safety problem. I will compare my results with official policies to understand what this can tell us about science popularization and its relationship to the state’s political priorities. \nI argue that popular science books on topics such as green consumption and green living teach readers to deal with environmental food safety risks through their own lifestyle and consumption behaviors. They shift responsibility away from the government and onto citizens\, telling people that they can consume safely if they shop “scientifically” and follow popular science advice. In doing so\, these works of science popularization closely reflect the state’s neoliberal approach to dealing with environmental food safety risks. \nRegister
